TNA E-Mail Exclusive
Interview with Bill Banks about TNA's new DVD releases
TNA recently announced the release of 3 brand new DVDs, just in time for the holiday season. TNA's Bill Banks was the lead editor of the DVDs and took the time to answer some questions about the DVD collection, exclusively for our TNA E-mail List Members.

Q: Bill, thanks for joining us today. What role exactly did you play in the creation of these DVDs?

A: Basically, I was asked to put together the footage by Bob Ryder. We had talked about doing DVD's since I arrived in July, and we finally decided to go ahead with them. It was actually Jeff Jarrett and Bob Ryder who put the matches together, but as far as the editing process, I oversaw that.

Q: The three DVDs focus on Title Matches, the X Division, and Bloodiest Brawls, respectively. How much of TNA's history would you say is covered in these three DVDs? Does it go back to the debut in June 2002?

A: It goes back to the very first show, and we made it a point to highlight many of the matches from the first year. If haven't gotten a chance to see TNA, this is a great way to see the ongoing evolution of TNA, as well as some of the matches that put us on the map. For example, the matches on the Best of the X Division feature AJ Styles, Jerry Lynn and Amazing Red at some of their best. And as far as the Best of the TNA Title Matches, you've got Match of the Year Candidate AMW vs. Triple X from the anniversary show. But to answer your question, yes, the DVDs focus a great deal on the first year in TNA.

Q: Bill, there have been a lot of really great X Division matches over the past year. How did you guys narrow it down? What qualities did a match have to have to make the cut?

A: Three names - AJ Styles, Jerry Lynn and Amazing Red. In my opinion, these guys were not only the foundation of the X Division in TNA's first year, but in a way TNA itself. You couldn't help but watch their matches and say "Wow." And as far as Bonus Footage, all three DVDs have them too. On the Best of the X Division, we included the Ultimate X match with Sabin, Shane and Kazarian. On the Best of the TNA Title Matches, we include Mike Tenay's sitdown with Sting, and on the Best of the Bloodiest Brawls, you've got the complete and uncensored Hair vs. Hair match between Raven and the Franchise.

Q: What's your favorite match on each DVD?

A: As far as the Best of the TNA Title Matches, I'd have to go with the big NWA Championship match in April between Jeff Jarrett and Raven. The buildup to that match was tremendous, and there was so much emotion and intrigue going into that match. And it really came through as far as being a great match with lots of twists and turns. There were even fans so emotional they were throwing garbage in the ring after Raven lost. I think the DVD does a great job of capturing that buildup and match even months after watching it again.

As far as the Best of the X Division, you could obviously say the Ultimate X, because that was tremendous as well. But as far as naming a single match, it's tough to do. But I will say this - the stuff that Amazing Red does throughout the DVD just blew me away. Literally every match on this DVD is excellent. Another favorite was the Low Ki vs. Jerry Lynn vs. AJ Styles Triple Ladder Match from October 2002. That was one of the most innovative matches I ever saw.

And on the Best of the Bloodiest Brawls DVD, if you're a fan of brutality - it's in there. You've got the best of Sandman, New Jack, Raven and the New Church. But as far as a favorite on the DVD, I'd have to go with the Raven headshaving. If you didn't get a chance to see it, and have a strong stomach, check it out. It wasn't so much a haircutting as it was a scalping on live television.

Q: Who do you think will get the most enjoyment out of these DVDs? TNA diehard fans? Or fans who haven't seen TNA before?

A: I know this sounds cliche - but I think both. For fans who have followed TNA throughout, you've got the best on three DVDs that you couldn't get anywhere else. And for fans who just recently got into TNA, you've got a chance to see matches like AMW vs. Triple X and Raven vs. Jarrett. And I also forgot to mention that we also include comments from AMW, AJ Styles, Jeff Jarrett, Sabin, Michael Shane and Frankie Kazarian on the DVDs. For the first time, the men behind the "superstars" talk about the matches and even share some good stories. And again, not to sound cliche - but a guarantee you won't be sorry leaving it under the tree for the holidays. And it's a huge opportunity for our international fans who haven't seen us before to get a taste of TNA as well.

Q: Bill, thanks for joining us for this TNA E-mail Exclusive.

A: My pleasure. And cheap plug - my new column, The Bank Shot, is now a regular feature on NWATNA.com. Check it out. Peace.
