Halloween!

Halloween!

Yesterday there was Halloween and I´m very interested how you celebrated it!

I personally hate Halloween, because some years ago, nobody in Austria was celebrating it and under the influence of America this stuff is coming up to us too. So I didn´t "celebrate" it at all - for me All Saint´s Day is much more important!

Re: Halloween!

Well, it actually has an interesting history.  It's really a hispanic holiday, I guess ..?  It began as El Dia de los Muertos "The Day of the Dead" and the event traveled to America and eventually evolved into what we know as Halloween.  It's actually a day to worship the dearly departed in the family (for the hispanic culture), but we celebrate it a little differently.  We get to dress up in costumes and go around houses gathering candy.  We say "trick or treat!" to the people and they hand us candy.  It's for little kids, and I remember liking it a lot.  This Halloween, my friends and I were a part of an event called "Trick or Treat so Kids Can Eat"  And it was a donation program where we go around asking for canned food items instead of candy.  My friends and I gathered 125 cans!!!  It was exciting.  They all go to a place that hands out food for kids who are homeless or poor, or both.

But I got side tracked.. uhm ... yeah, it's a nice holiday for kids who can't get enough candy .. haha

Re: Halloween!

Very good idea to collect for poor kids, because you can probably buy your sweets by yourself too....

And how did you disguise yourself this year??

Re: Halloween!

Actually, Halloween used to be a Christian event called "All Hallows Eve" where people would carve gourds to scare away evil spirits and disguise themselves from, again, the evil spirits.

I didn't go out for Halloween this year, but I went to a Halloween party as a mime!!

Re: Halloween!

I´ve always thought that Halloween is originally an irish or celtic festivity!?

Re: Halloween!

Well, Christianity came to North America through Spain and Portugal... and Christianity came to Spain and Portugal through the United Kingdom.  So... it kind of does have that background...

Re: Halloween!

hmm ... well there has to be SOME connection to the hispanic holiday.  I mean, they're kinda like ... a day apart or something.  Anyways, haha I was a NINJA for Halloween, cuz I'm Asian and that would just make sense.

Re: Halloween!

I always thought there is just horrifying disguising stuff on Halloween - are there also people who are going around as clowns for example or something funny??

Re: Halloween!

yes .. people do crazy/funny things like that.  It's really funny

Re: Halloween!

you dress up as anything you want, really... the little kids (especially the little boys) dress up as scary stuff and then try to scare the girls... they all dress up as fairy princesses and barbies or something...
