FanFic: The New World
Chapter 1
The morning was fresh, cold and windy. Tension lied in the air, but the morning was still pleasing. The flowers smelled strongly of their perfume, which had not been washed away by the rainstorm of the previous night. The opening blossoms, on the trees, looked like children on their swings. People were opening their windows, from where the smell of muffins, bacon and coffee escaped out onto the street. Cars were driving along the road. A mother and her child were walking on the sidewalk, in the direction of the kindergarten, and the shops, which had just opened. The children who where on their way to school had begun to play hide and seek but there where barely any good hiding places. Only a few cars where left, after people had gone to work. The appearance of the sky and the city itself revealed that it would be a sunny day.
He walked along the street, not knowing what was going to happen to him. But that would change soon. His face showed the feeling of unsavory. He didnt know if it had been a good decision that he had made. He just didnt want to be involved in any problems, even though he always tried to provoke them. He knew that the assignment he had to do included taking a big risk, and now there he was doing something that he was not even supposed to do according to his authorities, so he felt even more unsafe in what he was doing against what he had been told to do. This was the first time he did something on his own something that had a big responsibility. Just now, as he thought of that responsibility, he realized how heavy his backpack was. It was filled with little silver metal containers that held small, yellow embryos warped in a Jell-O like, green substance. The metal was rock hard, but the containers themselves were light. The label read:
Biological Experimental Product
These embryos where very precious, and he felt very uncomfortable, carrying a big responsibility on his shoulders.
Two weeks ago, he had noticed a tall, dark skinned man of about 39 years of age watching him. Watching every little step he took, and that made him begin to worry about who the people were he passed along the street. The ´spy´ was mostly dressed in jeans, t ~ shirts and sunglasses.
Walking along the busy street he felt discomfort, pressure and fear. His heart pounded fast, as he turned around the corner, in the direction of the institute.
John Sandler was sitting in his car, watching people crossing the street, heaving discussions about how the weather was going to be. Everything seemed so unreal, like if there had been some thunderstorm the other night, and everything had been washed away. There was no wind blowing, no paper sliding on the ground, or any grass moving from side to side because of the pressure caused by a driving car. In the distance you heard the river flowing through the middle of the city.
John Sandler was thinking of what to do next. Suddenly a young man with a muscular but thin, tall body came around the corner. He wore a khaki t ~ shirt and pants, Sunglasses, and a backpack.
Thats him, Sandler said to himself, pull yourself together. You know what will happen if you dont do what they want. So get out of the car and just do it!
As nobody walked along the street, Sandler opened the door of the car and stepped out. As he locked it he noticed that something was tearing on his pants on the bottom of his left leg. It tickled him a bit, and then he felt an excruciating pain. He yelled loudly. Sandler looked down his leg, and saw a little green lizard. He bent down to get a closer look and realized that it wasnt a lizard. Something bothered him about this creature but he didnt know what it was. There was just something about it. He had never liked biology very much but from some past experiences, he at least knew something about it. Well only about lizards because at the time they studied them in school he liked them very much. He had mostly liked them when they were looking out at him from under the skirts of his math teacher. And then it just exploded in his mind. He knew that lizards had four toes, but this one only had three. He tried to think of an answer, but then got more interested in what the lizard would do if Sandler would touch him. The lizard had a piece of the Sandler`s pants in its mouth. It moved its head slightly to the side, and seemed to have no fear. When Sandler moved a step towards the animal, to lift it up, it made a little squeaking sound. Not like a skink, rather like a bird. He wondered how the lizard had come into the car. Probably this morning, Sandler thought, when he had to change a tier on his car.
He had driven through the forest, and because he was to concentrate on his assignment, he lost control over the car and crashed into a shed. And while Sandler changed the tier, the animal must have climbed into the car.
He put the lizard back on the ground, and got back into his car. He decided to go back home, to change into other pants. And then continue on with his assignment.
He turned around the corner, as he recognized the person, who came out of the car. His fear grew. It was the pursuer, who had watched all of his movements, and as the man yelled, he got hysterical and ran as fast as he could into a narrow street. He hid behind a trashcan, trying to think clearly again. When he calmed down, he slowly went back to the street. The man wasnt there anymore. The last few meters to the institute, he walked hiding in his jacket, looking all around him, very carefully. Trying to not get seen by anybody, and for sure not by the pursuer.
