As preparations were being made in Washington for the Gulf War, a group of Palestinian intellectuals gathered in a Manhattan apartment to discuss how the Palestine Liberation Organization should respond to Saddam Husseins 1990 invasion of Kuwait.
Raji Sourani, director of the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, was among those in attendance. He has confirmed to us that after much debate the conclusion was clear: occupation is occupation, no matter who was responsible and even if the impending American war was equally illegitimate.
The group then dispatched Edward Said, a member of the Palestinian National Council, to Tunis.
Said was asked to try to convince Yasser Arafat, the PLO leader, that he should condemn the Iraqi invasion. Arafat ignored Said and many others and backed Saddam.
It was a moral and political miscalculation which led to approximately 400,000 Palestinians being expelled or fleeing from Kuwait after Iraqi forces were dislodged in 1991.
PA security officer arrested after criticizing Abbas' participation in Peres funeral
Palestinian security forces arrested a Palestinian military liaison officer from his home in Jenin on Saturday, a day after he shared a post on his Facebook criticizing Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' participation in the funeral of former Israeli president Shimon Peres.
A member of Osama Abu Arabs family told Maan via telephone that large numbers of Palestinian security officers surrounded Abu Asabs home Saturday morning and took him into custody.
The source highlighted that hours before Abu Arab was arrested, he was notified that he was suspended from his work as a major in the Palestinian Authority military liaison office. The military liaison is a unit with the Palestinian security forces responsible for coordinating security with Israel.
The caller also said that the family believed Abu Arab was suspended from his work and arrested as a result of a post he published on his Facebook page asking Abbas to reconsider his decision to attend Peres funeral. https://www.maannews.com/Content.aspx?id=773371

Genocide advocate Ayelet Shaked revives Peres plan for West Bank
Ayelet Shaked, Israels justice minister, faced protests as she spoke to law students and professors at Columbia Universitys law school on 19 September.
In a secret audio recording taken during the closed event, Shaked can be heard seeking to revive a discredited idea long championed by Shimon Peres, the leading Israeli politician who died this week.
The idea is that a deal could be struck with Jordan to push Palestinians under its jurisdiction as Israel maintains effective control over the occupied West Bank.
A key objective behind Peres plan the so-called Jordanian option was to sideline the Palestine Liberation Organization and neuter Palestinian resistance to Israel. Palestinians saw it as an affront to their right of self-determination.
Shaked denies Israel is an occupier, claiming that the West Bank is merely territory under dispute.https://electronicintifada.net/blogs/nora-barrows-friedman/genocide-advocate-ayelet-shaked-revives-peres-plan-west-bank

Palestinian elections postponed until next year
The Palestinian government decided Tuesday to delay municipal elections for up to four months after the high court ruled they should be held only in the West Bank and not in the Gaza Strip.
Palestinian court excludes Gaza from municipal elections
The Palestinian high court on Monday ordered municipal elections to be held only in the West Bank and not in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, though a new date for the suspended polls was not set.
The ruling could bring to an end hopes that the municipal elections would be the first since 2006 in which both Islamist movement Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, and Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah, which runs the West Bank, would participate. .....There has been no Palestinian presidential election since 2005 and Abbas has remained in office despite the expiry of his term https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/palestinian-court-orders-west-bank-only-elections-1435623447

Tthe PA is not targeting diaspora Palestinians critical of Abbas...
Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs Riyad al-Maliki denied on Monday claims that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had ever asked him or other Palestinian Authority (PA) officials to go after diaspora Palestinians who criticized Abbas on social media.
In an interview with Maan on Monday, al-Maliki said that he was "surprised with the false accusations which pass from mouth to mouth."
A number of posts on the Internet have accused Abbas of requesting that PA officials use their diplomatic positions to target diaspora Palestinians who take to social media to defame and incite against Abbas, al-Maliki said. https://www.maannews.com/Content.aspx?id=773495

Khan Eshieh camp under renewed attack
Russian and Syrian government air strikes hit the Palestinian refugee camp west of Damascus in the pre-dawn hours, killing a baby, while shelling throughout the day killed another two.
Since the end of last month, shelling on the camp has intensified, said Emad al-Muslimani, a media activist inside the camp. Barrel bombs, cluster munitions, bunker-buster missiles, you name it. It is like the camp is being used as a testing ground for weapons.
On one day during last week, al-Muslimani counted 50 shells pounding the camp within the space of 15 minutes. He described it as the worst period he can remember going through.https://electronicintifada.net/content/khan-eshieh-camp-under-renewed-attack/18216

Missed Opportunity
Fatehs 7th Congress shows how far the movement has sunk reduced to choosing between two disastrous options: Abbas or Dahlan.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had a great opportunity to begin making some badly needed changes at the just-concluded 7th Congress of Fateh, the dominant Palestinian political grouping and mainstay of the PLO. But judging by the Congress outcomes, the identity of the delegates and the criteria by which they were chosen, the discussions they held on its side-lines or behind closed doors and their reactions it was an opportunity squandered. https://www.bariatwan.com/english/?p=2212
Where is Fatah Headed after Its Seventh Congress?
After years of holding the Palestinian struggle hostage to their factional-feud, the current enemy of Palestinian unity today is not just the Fatah-Hamas dispute. According to Mouin Rabbani, writing in Al Jazeera, another pressing problem is the power struggle within Fatah itself.
Hold Your Applause, Fatah: The Palestinian Body Politic is Rotten to the Core
In July 2003, the then Palestinian Authority Chairman, Yasser Arafat, described Mahmoud Abbas as a traitor who betrayed the interests of the Palestinian People. Arafat loathed Abbas to the very end. This particular outburst was made during a meeting with United Nations envoy Terje Larsen. The meeting took place a few months after Arafat was coerced by the US, Israel and other Western powers to appoint Abbas as Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority. https://www.palestinechronicle.com/hold-your-applause-fatah-the-palestinian-body-politic-is-rotten-to-the-core/
Abbas the Politician Spoils It for Abbas the Statesman
In his speech to Fatah delegates, the Palestinian president implied that his people should abandon armed struggle and focus on attainable goals. Yet his power doesn't stem from this stance but from his control of funds and jobs. The Mahmoud Abbas that Fatah delegates discussed among themselves (or when talking to journalists) at the seventh Fatah conference this week is a wily and clever politician. He managed to oust opponents from his party while pushing others to the margins, as well as allowing resolutions made by his own Central Committee to fizzle out such as the cessation of security cooperation with Israel. https://kbnews.eu/bdm-news/1783-abbas-the-politician-spoils-it-for-abbas-the-statesman
Killing Arafat: Does Abbas have any evidence?
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has revived long-standing suspicions that his predecessor, Yasser Arafat, was murdered. Abbas announced last week that he knew the killers identity, adding that the world would be amazed when you know who did it.
As Fatah meets, a time bomb ticks in Palestinian camps
The Palestinian camps are on edge. Often they are subject to raids and arrests by the Palestinian Authority (PA), as its forces try to locate those it accuses of murder, arms smuggling and drug trafficking.
Is rapprochement underway between Palestinian rivals Dahlan, Hamas?
The recent rapprochement between Hamas and dismissed Fatah leader Mohammed Dahlan and the "Democratic Reformist Current," which Dahlan formed with some Fatah leaders after his dismissal in 2011, was predicted. Dahlan has been repeatedly praising Hamas most recently during an interview with Dream TV Egypt on Oct. 23 when he implied that rapprochement with Hamas is the solution to all of Gazas problems. https://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2016/10/rapprochement-between-hamas-and-fatah-dismissed-dahlan.html
Has Fatah put Dahlan secession to rest?
At times, it has seemed as if Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas were trying single-handedly to fend off pressure from friend and foe to reinstate the expelled renegade Mohammed Dahlan in Fatah's ranks or continue to postpone the movement's long-anticipated congress. If Abbas felt lonely before the congress, he didnt feel at all isolated after it convened Nov. 29, also the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. Abbas, who was scheduled to give a speech on the opening day, decided midway through the evening to postpone it so the 60 delegates from 28 countries could show the world how much support he and Fatah have. https://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2016/12/fatah-seventh-congress-abbas-regional-international-support.html

Local sources in Kafr Kanna told Maan that the victims uncle Jamal Hakroush is a high-ranking official in the Israeli police, in charge of improving police services in Palestinian neighborhoods in Israel.
Palestinian-majority neighborhoods in Israel have seen an increase in gun violence in recent years, while members of the Arab Joint List of Israels parliament, the Knesset, have called on authorities to crack down on illegal weapons in Israels Palestinian communities, where there is a disproportionate lack of policing compared to Jewish-majority neighborhoods. https://www.maannews.com/Content.aspx?id=774036

When Palestinian Fuad Abu Khaled fled Syria's war in 2013, he sought refuge among his own, looking for solidarity among Palestinian refugees based in Lebanon's Shatila camp.
But instead he found a community already struggling to get by and sometimes resentful of new arrivals who are testing the limited resources of the UN agency dedicated to helping Palestinian refugees.
'Afro-Palestinians' forge a unique identity in Israel
In the shadow of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem's Old City lies the "African Quarter" home to a little-known community of nearly 50 Arab families of African descent.
Descended from Muslim pilgrims from a variety of African countries, they now consider themselves proud Palestinians, despite widespread poverty and occasional discrimination from both Palestinians and Israelis. Several have even participated in violent attacks against Israel.
"We regard ourselves to be Afro-Palestinian," said community leader Ali Jiddah.
Jiddah, a former member of the radical Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, spent 17 years in Israeli prison for taking part in a 1968 bombing that wounded nine Israelis before he was freed in a prisoner swap. Jiddah, who long ago renounced violence, is now a well-known tour guide in the Old City, offering what he calls an "alternative" perspective on the conflict with Israel. https://bigstory.ap.org/article/f6bf554b21d04b56be9d6385fbf36d31/afro-palestinians-forge-unique-identity-israel

Lebanon: Schools in Palestinian camp reopen after gun battles
Schools and social services have resumed in Lebanons largest Palestinian refugee camp, amid sporadic violence which has interrupted lessons and raised questions about local forces ability to keep the peace.
It is the first time in four months that shootings have prompted UNRWA, the UN agency that provides aid for Palestinian refugees, to halt operations at Ain al-Hilweh on the outskirts of the southern Lebanese city of Saida.

Basil al-Araj assassinated by Israeli occupation forces after PA imprisonment and months in hiding
In a pre-dawn raid attacking a home in el-Bireh, Basil al-Araj, 31, Palestinian youth activist and writer pursued by Israel for nearly a year, was assassinated by invading Israeli occupation forces this morning.
Al-Araj, from the village of Walaja near Bethlehem, fought back and resisted the invading forces for two hours before the attacking occupation soldiers broke into the home where he was staying and executed him at close range. They then seized his body and took it to an unknown location.
The attack on the home included rocket fire as well as al-Arajs extrajudicial execution in a hail of bullets. Al-Arajs family home in al-Walaja had been repeatedly raided by occupation forces for months.
Al-Araj, a writer and activist involved in a wide array of Palestinian grassroots struggles for liberation, was among the Palestinian youth dedicated to reviving the Palestinian national liberation movement. One of six Palestinian youth released from Palestinian Authority prisons after nearly six months of detention when they launched a hunger strike, Al-Araj and other youth had been seized in April in what was touted as a victory for security coordination between the PA and Israel. While they were imprisoned by the PA, they were subject to torture and ill-treatment by PA security forces. https://samidoun.net/2017/03/basil-al-araj-executed-by-israeli-occupation-forces-after-pa-imprisonment-and-months-in-hiding/
