The Rediff Special/Player of the day
'Little Mozart' comes of age
June 13, 2006
It was not Pavel Nedved or Petr Cech who stole the limelight in the Czech Republic's opening World Cup match against the United States, but Tomas Rosicky, who scored two goals in a convincing 3-0 victory.
Rosicky struck a superb 25 metre goal in the 36th minute to leave US goalkeeper Kasey Keller helpless as the ball swerved away from him into the top left corner of the net. He then capped the win with a second and the team's third in the 76th minute.
Nicknamed "Little Mozart" for his orchestration of play, Rosicky won his first cap when he was just 19 and has since been capped 53 times.
The 25-year-old, who has traded the yellow shirt of Borussia Dortmund for the red of Arsenal, came along just as Juventus midfielder Pavel Nedved raised his game to a new level to eventually become the European Footballer of the Year in 2003.
With Nedved in self-imposed exile after the Euro 2004 tournament, Rosicky blossomed during the World Cup 2006 qualifying campaign, scoring seven goals and setting up several others.
His most dangerous partnership is with giant striker Jan Koller, his teammate at Borussia Dortmund for the last five seasons.
In November, an injured Rosicky scored the winner in the second leg of the Czech Republic's playoff against Norway to seal the country's first World Cup appearance since Czechoslovakia made it in 1990, when Rosicky was just a nine year-old schoolboy.
"I first admired him for going on the pitch with the health complications he had. And he crowned it with the winning goal, this tells you everything," coach Karel Brueckner said after the Norway match where Rosicky played through a calf injury.
Rosicky himself described the goal as "the most important goal of my life"
He set a Bundesliga transfer fee record in January 2001 when he moved from Sparta Prague after just 18 months in the first team as Dortmund beat off competition from Liverpool for his signature.
The German club's exit from Europe and eventual fall into heavy debt prevented him from shining at the top European level. But the move to Arsenal next season will provide with him that opportunity.
But, first, he will have to sparkle among the best -- at the World Cup in Germany and that is where his true potential will be known. He has already made a good start. Czech fans will be hoping his scoring form continues.

Ros: I'm Gunner be hit
From ANDREW DILLON in Cologne
TOMAS ROSICKY has warned his new Arsenal team-mates to expect a fight for first-team places.
The midfielder wants to be a Premiership star after making a £6.8million move from German club Borussia Dortmund.
Rosicky, 25, is the rising star of a Czech side ravaged by injuries at the World Cup.
He said: The Gunners have always been my favourite club. When Aleksandr Hleb moved there I was envious.
Ill have to prove myself. But thats why I wanted to be transferred there. I want to improve, I want the competition.
I like their style fast and direct. Along with Barcelona, Arsenal play the most beautiful football in Europe.
Rosicky has already scored two stunning goals at the World Cup.
One was a 30-yard wonder strike during a 3-0 win against the USA.
Injury has ruled out Jan Koller and Aston Villa striker Milan Baros for the Czechs second Group E match against Ghana in Cologne today.
If they and Italy win their respective games, they will qualify for the second round with a match to spare.
Rosicky insists the exciting Czechs will not sacrifice their principles of attacking football, even if it means dropping points.
He said: We play aggressive, imaginative football. We dont sit back. So if we lose and get knocked out, its always the same story the Czechs are stupid, they always attack and fall on their own sword.
Ghana coach Ratomir Dujkovic reckons midfield ace Sulley Ali Muntari would be a hit in England.
The Udinese star had a trial with Manchester United but work permit problems got in the way.
Dujkovic said: Hes a good player who has been in Italy for a few years now. He could play in any country, including the Premiership.
LIKELY LINE-UPS CZECH REP: Cech, Grygera, Jankulovski, Rozehnal, Ujfalusi, Galasek, Nedved, Poborsky, Rosicky, Plasil, Lokvenc.

ich weiß nicht, ob das funktioniert, weil ich kann es mir eh nicht anschaun mit meinen 40 kbit/sec aber ich poste es mal:
Arsenal new boy Tomas Rosicky scored two beauties in the Czech's opening world cup game against the USA.
Vital Arsenal has been handed a video of both his awesome goals. So here it is for those of you who haven't seen them, or those of you who just want to see them again, and lets face it, who wouldn't.
The added bonus of this video is the American commentators who will entertain you whilst Koller's goal highlights are on. American's shouldn't be allowed to commentate. Seriously.
Enjoy.

Im no great shooter: Rosicky
Tomas Rosicky
Gelsenkirchen: Tomas Rosicky scored twice in the Czech Republics World Cup opener with the US on Monday and then said he was no great goalscorer. With key strikers Jan Koller and Milan Baros both injured, however, midfielder Rosicky may just have to become one.
The Czechs beat the US 3-0, helped by Rosickys goals, one of them a fine swerving shot from 25 metres. Of course, Im no great shooter... but I tried and today it worked. Three would probably have been too many, he said.
Coach Karel Brueckner was forced to abandon his usual 4-4-2 formation and play Koller as a lone striker after Baros failed to recover from a foot injury.
The problems facing the two top strikers will put pressure on midfielders like Rosicky to push forward more in their remaining games against Ghana and Italy.
The Czechs have a wealth of talent to draw on in midfield, including former European Footballer of the Year Pavel Nedved. I dont need to say anything about Pavel... he is still one of the best players in Europe, said Brueckner.
The team still features most of the players that reached the Euro 2004 semi-finals but the media has expressed concern that with three-quarters of the midfield over 30 they are past it.
That view did not hold up against the US and the coach certainly does not agree with the commentators. Our team is not getting old, he said.
Meanwhile, US coach Bruce Arena said on Tuesday he had no regrets about criticising individual players after the loss. It (the evaluation) was accurate. The reason we lost the game was that their players played better than our players. Individually, they were better and won most of the match-ups on the field.
Following the loss, Arena uncharacteristically criticised individual players especially Landon Donovan and DaMarcus Beasley for their performance.
Arena said he had met the starting team as a group since the game, but had not had too many individual discussions. He said that he had not met with Beasley and did not yield on his public criticism of him.
The result is not going to go away, Arena said. We have a day or two to regroup, lick our w ounds a bit and put it past us. Theres still six points out there. (Reuters
